Who Texted You? Short Code Checker

Got a text from a strange 5- or 6-digit number — like 72166, 57513, or 28777? That's called a short code. Type it below and we'll tell you who really owns it, what their real texts look like, and how to spot a fake.

🔒 Private: the lookup runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent or stored.

The golden rule: a real short code on your screen does not prove a text is genuine — scammers can fake the sender name or number. Judge every text by what it asks you to do, never by the number it came from.

What is a short code?

A short code is a special 5- or 6-digit number that companies use to text you — your bank's fraud alerts, USPS tracking updates, Walmart verification codes. Companies use them instead of regular 10-digit numbers so you see the same sender every time. You can't call a short code back like a normal number.

Two handy facts: every legitimate US short-code program must answer if you reply HELP (it sends back the company name and how to opt out), and replying STOP unsubscribes you. If a code ignores both HELP and STOP, that's a red flag — report it by forwarding the text to 7726.

Verified short-code directory

Every code below was checked against the company's own published terms or multiple independent records in October 2026 — 28 codes and counting. Where the evidence is weaker than official terms, the row says so in plain words. We re-check this list regularly — short codes can be reassigned. Last verified: October 2026.

A note on the Amazon rows: Amazon doesn't publish an official short-code list, so both rows rest on multiple independent records — and in practice the two codes sometimes swap jobs (262966 has also carried login codes). Judge any Amazon text by what it asks, not just its number.

57513 in depth: the Walmart code that isn't on Walmart's list

Walmart does not list 57513 on its official list of texting numbers — we read Walmart's Mobile Alerts Terms ourselves on October 21, 2026, and 57513 is not there. Even so, real Walmart verification codes have been reported from 57513 for years, and scammers abuse this number heavily. Here is how to handle any 57513 text.

What a real one looks like:

  • A single 6-digit code and nothing else — in the format "…is your Walmart verification code. It expires in 15 minutes. We'll never call or text to request this code."
  • It only arrives because you just did something — signing in to Walmart.com, creating an account, or resetting a password — seconds earlier.
  • Never a link. Never a request to reply with the code or call a number.

How scammers abuse 57513:

  • The code-harvest call — the dangerous one. A scammer tries to sign in to your Walmart account, which triggers a genuine code to your phone. Then they call, pretending to be Walmart's fraud department, and ask you to "read back the code we just sent to prove it's you." Handing it over hands them your account. The real text warns you itself: "We'll never call or text to request this code."
  • The spoofed sender. Scammers can fake the number shown on your screen. A message displaying 57513 with a link, a prize, a refund, or an "order problem" is not from Walmart — real ones contain only a code.
  • The surprise code. A code you didn't request means someone mistyped their number — or is probing yours. It is never a reason to call a number "to cancel it."
I got a text from 57513 — is it really from Walmart?

It may carry a real Walmart verification code, but Walmart doesn't list 57513 as an official number. Only trust it if you requested a code seconds before — and even then, only type it into Walmart yourself, on the app or website you opened.

Why did I get a Walmart verification code I didn't ask for?

Usually it means someone is trying to sign in to an account using your number, or someone mistyped theirs. Don't share the code with anyone. If it keeps happening, change your Walmart password from the app or website you open yourself.

Someone from Walmart called and asked for my code. Is that real?

No — never. The real message itself says Walmart will never call or text to request your code. Hang up. That call is the scam, even if the code in your texts is genuine.

Is 57513 a Walmart receipt number?

No. Walmart's published receipt texts (eReceipts) come from different numbers on its official list — 24178 and 38631. A 'receipt' or refund message from 57513 carrying a link is a scam pattern.

Can I just block 57513?

You can, but if you shop at Walmart.com you may block real sign-in codes too. Most people are better off leaving it unblocked and judging each message by the rules above.

What to do instead: never tap links (real 57513 texts have none) and never read a code to any caller. Worried about your Walmart account? Open the Walmart app, or type walmart.com yourself, and check there. Forward scam texts to 7726.

41646 in depth: Walmart pickup & service alerts

41646 is on Walmart's official list — its Mobile Alerts Terms name 41646 (with 61746 and 50917) for pickup and service alerts, and we confirmed it on Walmart's own page on October 21, 2026. But a real number is only half the story: scammers can fake the sender on any text, so the message still has to earn your trust.

What a real one looks like:

  • A pickup-ready or pickup-reminder note tied to an order you placed.
  • Service updates — auto care, bakery, photo — for an appointment you booked at Walmart.
  • It never sends verification codes, prizes, refunds, or "account problem" warnings.

How scammers abuse it:

  • Fake pickup problems. A surprise text claiming your pickup is delayed or cancelled, asking you to "confirm" an address or payment through a link. The link leads to a look-alike page built to harvest Walmart logins or card details — aimed squarely at grocery-pickup shoppers.
  • Sender spoofing. The displayed number can be faked. Judge the text by its content and by whether you actually have an order in motion.
  • Wrong-order bait. A message about an order you never placed, designed to make you tap a "not my order" link. Don't — check the app instead.
Is 41646 really a Walmart number?

Yes — 41646 is on Walmart's published list in its Mobile Alerts Terms, for pickup and service alerts. But scammers can fake any sender, so still judge the message itself, not just the number.

Why did Walmart text me from 41646?

Because you have a pickup order or a service appointment in progress — or because a scammer is pretending. If you have neither, treat the text as fake.

I got a 41646 text but I didn't order anything. Is it a scam?

Very likely, yes. Don't tap anything in it. Open the Walmart app yourself and look — if there is no order, there was no real message.

The text says my pickup is ready but asks me to confirm through a link. Should I?

No. Check your order status inside the Walmart app, or at walmart.com typed by you. Real pickup alerts never need you to enter payment or login details from a text link.

How do I stop Walmart pickup texts?

Reply STOP to the thread, or turn off order text alerts in your Walmart account settings. If the texts were fake, don't reply at all — forward them to 7726 instead.

What to do instead: handle every pickup question inside the Walmart app or at walmart.com opened by you — your order status lives there, not in a text. Never enter card details to "release" or "confirm" a pickup. Forward scam texts to 7726.

Codes we get asked about that we can't verify

We only list short codes we've verified ourselves. Two common ones we cannot verify, so we won't guess:

  • Apple verification codes — Apple sends login codes from short codes but publishes no official list. The safe way to check an Apple alert: open Settings on your iPhone and look for a red badge under your Apple ID — a real alert appears there, never only in a text.
  • Any code not in our table — reply HELP to the text (legitimate programs must answer with the company name), or look it up in the official US Short Code Registry.

Short Code Checker questions, answered

What is a short code?

A short code is a special 5- or 6-digit phone number (like 72166 or 28777) that companies use to text you. Banks, delivery companies, and stores use them so you recognize the same sender every time. They are not regular phone numbers — you can't call them back like a normal number.

Is 72166 really Chase?

Yes — 72166 is one of three short codes Chase lists on its own website for fraud and account security alerts (the others are 28107 and 36640). But scammers can fake the sender name on your screen, so the number alone never proves a text is genuine. A real Chase text names your card's last 4 digits and never asks you to click a login link.

Is 767666 really Zelle?

Yes, 767666 is the short code banks use for Zelle payment and security alerts, confirmed in banks' own published disclosures. But a number on your screen is never proof by itself: scammers can fake any sender. A real Zelle text never asks you to send money, share a code, or tap a link.

I got a text from 57513 — is it from Walmart?

Honestly — it's complicated. Walmart does not list 57513 on its official list of texting numbers. But real Walmart verification codes have been reported from 57513 for years, and scammers abuse the number heavily. Only trust a 57513 text if you asked Walmart for a login code seconds earlier — and even then, type the code into Walmart yourself. Never read it out to anyone who calls: Walmart will never call or text to ask for it. A surprise 57513 text with a link is a scam pattern. There is a full 57513 guide further up this page.

Can scammers fake a short code?

Yes. Scammers can spoof the sender name or number shown on your screen, so a text that appears to come from a real short code is not automatic proof it is real. Judge every text by what it asks you to do: real companies never ask for passwords, codes, or gift cards by text, and never demand you click a link urgently.

What is 7726?

7726 spells S-P-A-M on your phone keypad. It is a free service run with US phone carriers: forwarding a scam text to 7726 reports it so the sender can be investigated and blocked. It works on AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and most other US networks.

The code I got isn't in your list — what now?

Our list only includes short codes we have personally verified, so a missing code doesn't mean it's a scam. Reply HELP to the text — US rules require legitimate short code programs to answer with the company name and opt-out instructions. Or look the code up in the official US Short Code Registry at usshortcodes.com. When in doubt, don't tap links — paste the message into our free Scam Checker.

Does Amazon text from 262966?

Yes — Amazon uses 262966 mainly for shipment tracking and delivery updates, and 25392 mainly for security and login codes — though in practice the two sometimes swap jobs, and Amazon doesn't publish an official list. Amazon texts never ask for your password or payment details, and you should always verify unexpected messages in your Amazon app or account rather than tapping a text link.

Should I reply STOP to a short code text?

Only reply STOP to messages from companies you recognize and previously signed up with — STOP is the universal opt-out command and legitimate programs must honor it. Never reply STOP (or anything else) to a text you believe is a scam, because any reply confirms your number is active. Instead, forward scam texts to 7726 and delete them.
