Is This Cash App or Venmo Message a Scam? Check First
Quick answer: A message about Cash App or Venmo is a scam if it asks you to send money, share a code, or call a number from the message. Payments on both apps are instant and usually cannot be canceled. Do not reply. Open the app yourself, or call Cash App at 1-800-969-1940 or Venmo at 1-855-812-4430.
Cash App and Venmo make sending money as easy as sending a text, and that is exactly why scammers love them. The money moves in seconds, and once it reaches the other person it is usually gone for good. The Federal Trade Commission puts it plainly: sending money through a payment app is like sending cash, and it is very hard to get it back. In 2024, people reported $470 million in losses to text scams of all kinds, more than five times the 2020 figure. Fake delivery problems were the most reported type. The message may arrive as a text, an email, a post, or a phone call. The shape never changes: a problem, a payment, and pressure to act now.
What a Cash App or Venmo scam looks like
Most of these scams follow one of a few scripts. The words change slightly, but the shape never does: something is wrong, money will fix it, and you must act now. The examples below are typical wordings seen in the wild, not messages copied from a real victim.
- "Your Cash App account will be closed. Call support now to verify your account." The number in the message is not Cash App. Cash App lists one support number, 1-800-969-1940, and any other number a message tells you to call, claiming to be Cash App, is a scam.
- "Send $50 and I will flip it to $500. Cash App flip, 100% real." There is no flip. You send the first payment, they ask for a fee, then they disappear.
- "Oops, I sent you $300 by mistake. Can you send it back to my $cashtag?" The payment that arrived may have come from a stolen card. If you send your own money back, you lose twice.
- "You won the Cash App giveaway! Send $25 to claim your $1,000." Real Cash App sweepstakes run only on the official @CashApp account. They never ask you to send money, share a code, or give your PIN.
- "Hi, it is Venmo support. Your account has unusual activity. Send a payment to verify your identity." No real payment app ever asks you to send money to verify your identity. Real Venmo help lives inside the app, under Get Help.
- "I need rent today or I lose the apartment. Can you Venmo me $800? I will pay you back Friday." The apartment, the puppy, and the concert tickets are never real. Cash App says it directly: never pay someone you do not trust for something promised in the future.
A message from a full ten-digit number, a short code, or an email address proves nothing. Judge every message by what it asks you to do, not by who it claims to be from.
The scam, step by step
The fake-support version fools the most careful people, because it starts with a message that looks like help.
- The alert. A text or email says your Cash App or Venmo account has a problem, a payment failed, or your account will be closed. It gives you a phone number or a link. Neither one belongs to the real company.
- The "agent." The person who answers sounds calm and professional. They already know your name, maybe your $cashtag or your Venmo username, information that is easy to find on a public profile.
- The "verification." They ask for the sign-in code Cash App or Venmo just sent you, or your PIN, or your full card number. That code is the key to your account. Cash App says it plainly: support will never ask for your sign-in code, your PIN, or your full card number.
- The "fix." They tell you to send a payment to a "secure" account, or to complete a "test" transaction. Or they tell you to download a remote-access app so they can fix the problem from your phone. Cash App will never ask you to send money, make a purchase, download a remote-access app, or complete a test transaction.
- The second ask. Once the first payment goes through, they say the fix needs one more payment, or a fee to release your money. Then the number goes dead, and the payment cannot be pulled back.
Why Cash App and Venmo? Why this works on careful people
Two things make this scam work, and neither one is carelessness.
First, speed. A Cash App or Venmo payment reaches the other person in seconds, and by the time you realize the call was fake, the money is already gone.
Second, the phone-number trap. People who get worried search for a support number, and the search results are full of fake ones. Cash App has exactly one support number, 1-800-969-1940, and it says so on its own help pages. Venmo has one general support number, 1-855-812-4430. Any other number in a message, claiming to be Cash App or Venmo support, is a scam. The only exceptions are a callback you requested and the number on the back of your Venmo card.
Real vs. fake, side by side
If the contact in your hand matches the right-hand column on even one row, treat it as a scam.
| Check | Real Cash App or Venmo contact | Scam contact |
|---|---|---|
| What it asks for | Asks you to check your activity in the app, or to report a problem there | Asks you to send a payment, share a code, or call a number in the message |
| The code | Never asks for your sign-in code, PIN, or full card number | Asks for the code the app just sent you |
| The phone number | Cash App: 1-800-969-1940. Venmo: 1-855-812-4430. A message that gives you a different number is fake | Any other number, found in a search result, a text, or a social media post |
| The email | Cash App mail comes only from @cash.app, @square.com, @surveys.squareup.com, or @squareup.com | Any other domain, even one that looks close, like cashapp-support.com |
| The promise | Never promises free money, doubled money, or a prize for a fee | Promises to flip your money or unlock a prize after a small payment |
| The fix | Never asks you to download a remote-access app or complete a "test" payment | Asks you to install an app like AnyDesk or send a test payment |
The one rule, and the 10-second check
The whole page comes down to one rule: if anyone tells you to send money to fix a problem, it is a scam. Cash App's rule is simple: its support never asks you to send money to any account. The FTC's guidance is the same for every payment app: never move money to "protect" it.
Here is the 10-second check. The first step that points to a scam ends it.
- Do not reply, tap, or call the number in the message. Replying tells them your number is live.
- Open the app yourself. Tap the Cash App or Venmo icon on your own phone, the way you always do. No problem in the app means no problem.
- Check the number. Cash App support is 1-800-969-1940. Venmo support is 1-855-812-4430. If the message gives you a different number, it is fake.
- Ask someone you trust. If anything feels rushed or confusing, show the message to a family member before you tap anything.
Then forward the text to 7726. That spells SPAM on a phone keypad, and it is the number your carrier wants scam texts sent to. Forwarding is free, and do not reply to the text, not even STOP.
What real Cash App and Venmo messages look like (and the numbers that matter)
Real Cash App help starts inside the app. Tap your profile icon, choose Support, and chat there. You can also go to cash.app/help in your browser. If you need to call, the number is 1-800-969-1940, daily from 8 in the morning to 9:30 at night Eastern time. Cash App says this is the only phone number customers can call for support. If you ask Cash App to call you back, the call comes from 1-858-227-4267 or 1-415-523-2287, and from no other number.
Real Venmo help also starts inside the app. Go to Me, then Settings, then Get Help, then Chat With Us. Teammates are there daily from 8 in the morning to 10 at night Central time. The general support phone number is 1-855-812-4430, daily from 8 in the morning to 8 at night Central time. For a lost or stolen card, call the number on the back of the card.
But a phone number proves nothing. Scammers can fake any number on your screen, including the real support numbers. Judge every contact by what it asks you to do, not by who it claims to be.
Only expect these messages if you use the app. A Cash App or Venmo message is fake on its face if you never set up that app.
Can I get my money back?
A refund is never guaranteed, and anyone who promises you one is not telling the truth.
On Cash App, a payment that is still pending can sometimes be canceled from your Activity feed. Once it is complete, it usually cannot be canceled, because Cash App to Cash App payments are instant. Report it in the app anyway: go to Activity, select the payment, then Report an issue.
On Venmo, there is no way to cancel a payment once it is sent. There are two narrow exceptions. If the payment is still pending because the recipient has not verified their phone number or email, you can take it back. If the payment is still processing with your bank, your bank may be able to stop it. But Venmo warns that canceling a completed Venmo payment through your bank creates a loss on your Venmo account that you will have to pay back.
Venmo's help center describes a Purchase Protection program for eligible purchases. It only applies when you tagged the payment as a purchase before sending it, or paid an authorized business profile. If the item never arrives, or arrives damaged or not as described, Venmo says it will investigate. You may get a refund if the investigation goes in your favor. A payment sent to a friend, with no purchase tag, has no protection, and Venmo says it may not be able to recover money sent that way. The program covers purchases, not payments sent because someone pressured you.
What to do if you already sent money, shared a code, or only replied
Do not panic, and do not wait. What you do in the first hour matters most.
- Only replied, and shared nothing: you are likely fine. Check your balance in the app.
- Shared a code or your PIN: open the app right away and change your PIN and password. Turn on every alert the app offers, and check for devices or bank accounts you do not recognize. Then call support on the real number: Cash App at 1-800-969-1940, Venmo at 1-855-812-4430.
- Sent money: report it inside the app immediately. On Cash App, go to Activity, select the payment, then Report an issue. On Venmo, go to Me, Settings, Get Help, then Chat With Us. Also call your bank on the number on the back of your card. Then report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI at ic3.gov, and forward the text to 7726.
- Someone sent you money "by mistake": do not send it back yourself. Contact support inside the app and let them return it. The payment may have come from a stolen card, and if it gets pulled back after you refunded it, you lose twice.
- If they got personal details: go to IdentityTheft.gov for steps matched to what you shared, and consider a free credit freeze at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. A freeze is free by federal law.
- Keep everything: screenshots of the message, the call log, the $cashtag or Venmo username, and any payment confirmations.
Watch for the second scam. Days later, someone may offer to get your money back for a fee. Real agencies and banks do not charge you to recover stolen money.
If anything feels rushed or confusing, show the message to someone you trust before you tap anything. Tell an older relative the one sentence that stops this scam. It is this: "If anyone says to send money to fix a problem, hang up and call me."
Other versions of the same trick
The ending is always the same: you send money, and it is gone. Only the costume changes.
The sugar-daddy and romance version. A new online boyfriend, or a "sugar daddy," sends you money first, then asks you to send some back, or to pay a fee to unlock it. The money they sent is fake or stolen and disappears. The money you sent is real and gone. Cash App says it directly: do not send money to a love interest you have not met in person.
The loved-one emergency. A text or call says your grandchild is in trouble and needs money fast, and the only way to help is Cash App or Venmo. The FTC's payment-app alert names this exact trick: a loved one in trouble, asking for emergency money. Hang up and call your grandchild or your friend on a number you already have.

Is this Cash App or Venmo message a scam?
A message about Cash App or Venmo is a scam if it asks you to send money, share a code, or call a number from the message. Real Cash App and Venmo messages never ask for your sign-in code, PIN, or password, and neither company will ever ask you to send money to fix a problem. Check the message in the app itself.
Can a Cash App payment be canceled or reversed?
Usually not. Cash App says Cash App to Cash App payments are instant and usually cannot be canceled. Check your Activity feed for a cancel option, which only appears while a payment is still pending. If it is complete, report it in the app (Activity, then the payment, then Report an issue). A refund is never guaranteed.
Can a Venmo payment be canceled?
No. Venmo says there is no way to cancel a payment once it is sent. If the payment is still pending because the recipient has not verified their phone or email, you can take it back. If you paid for a scam, contact Venmo Support in the app and report it.
What is the Cash App flip scam?
A stranger promises to flip your money, for example send $50 and get $500 back, or claims you won a Cash App giveaway. You send the first payment and they ask for another, then disappear. A promised flip, free money for a small payment, is almost always a scam. Real Cash App sweepstakes run only on the official @CashApp account and never ask for a code, a PIN, or a payment.
Someone sent me money on Venmo or Cash App by mistake. Should I send it back?
No, not by yourself. The payment that arrived may have come from a stolen card or a hacked account, and when the real owner reports it, that payment gets pulled back. The money you send to return it comes from your own balance and is gone. Venmo says to contact Support for help returning the payment and not to pay the stranger back on your own. Do the same on Cash App: report it in the app and let Cash App sort it out.
Where do I report a Cash App or Venmo scam?
First report it inside the app. On Cash App, go to Activity, select the payment, then Report an issue. On Venmo, go to Me, Settings, Get Help, then Chat With Us. Then report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and the FBI at ic3.gov. Forward any scam text to 7726 (SPAM). If you are 60 or older, the National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-372-8311 can help with reports.
