Why this pattern?

Bigfoot picked this one himself. It's small — you finish fast, no abandoned blanket in a drawer. It uses only one stitch that you repeat the whole time. And the stitches are big and easy to see. Make one for your mug, then make three more and you've got a gift set.

Materials

  • Yarn: worsted weight (#4) acrylic or cotton — pick a light color (cream, pale yellow, light blue). Light yarn makes stitches much easier to see.
  • Hook: 6 mm (US J-10) — an ergonomic / soft-grip hook is kinder on hands and wrists.
  • Scissors and a yarn needle (the big blunt one) for weaving in ends.

You'll use about 25 yards — scraps and leftover yarn are perfect.

Abbreviations (US terms)

  • ch — chain · sl st — slip stitch · dc — double crochet · st / sts — stitch / stitches · rnd — round

The only stitch you need: double crochet

  1. Yarn over (wrap the yarn around your hook once).
  2. Insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop — 3 loops on hook.
  3. Yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops — 2 loops left.
  4. Yarn over, pull through the last 2 loops — done! One double crochet.

🐾 Bigfoot tip: practice 10 double crochets before starting. If they're wobbly, that's fine — Bigfoot's first ones looked like a bird's nest too.

The Pattern

Starting ring: ch 4, then sl st into the first chain to form a ring.

Round 1: ch 3 (counts as your first dc), then work 11 dc into the center of the ring. Sl st into the top of the starting ch-3 to join. (12 dc total)

Round 2: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the same stitch, then 2 dc in each stitch all the way around. Sl st to join. (24 dc total)

Round 3: ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the next st, then repeat 11 times: dc in the next st, 2 dc in the following st. Sl st to the top of the beginning ch-3 to join. (36 dc total — about 4.5 inches / 11 cm across, should lie flat)

🐾 Bigfoot tip: edges curling up like a bowl? You're crocheting too tightly — try a bigger hook or relax your grip. Edges rippling like a potato chip? Too loose, or extra stitches snuck in. Count your stitches at the end of each round!

Finishing edge (optional but pretty): join a second color with a sl st in any stitch. Ch 1, then sc in each stitch around (36 sc). Sl st to join, cut the yarn leaving a 6-inch tail.

Weave in the ends: thread each tail onto your yarn needle and weave it back and forth through the stitches on the underside for about 2 inches. Trim. Done — put your mug on it. ☕

Make it yours

  • Gift set: make 4 in different colors, tie with ribbon.
  • Two-tone: change color at the start of Round 3.
  • Bigger mat: keep going — Round 4 is dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next (48 dc).

Senior-friendly tips

  • Light it up: crochet near a bright lamp — stitches are far easier to see.
  • Light yarn, big hook: dark yarn + small hook = eye strain. Cream yarn + 6 mm hook = joy.
  • Take breaks: 20 minutes of crochet, then stretch your hands and shoulders.
  • It's okay to unravel: every crocheter pulls out rows and starts again. It's called "frogging" — rip-it, rip-it. 🐸
I've never crocheted. Is this really a first project?

Yes — it was designed as one. One stitch repeated, big yarn, big hook, a 68-second video walkthrough, and a printable PDF. If you can hold a hook, you can make this coaster.

My coaster is curling / rippling. What did I do wrong?

Nothing tragic — it's a tension thing. Curling up like a bowl means too tight (relax your grip or go up a hook size). Rippling like a potato chip means too loose or accidental extra stitches. Count stitches at the end of each round and it'll sort itself out.

Can I sell the coasters I make?

Yes! Anything you make from this pattern is yours to keep, gift, or sell. Please just don't sell or redistribute the pattern PDF itself.

Honest note: this pattern is AI-designed and has not been physically tested yet. If a stitch count ever looks off, trust your eyes and adjust — and tell us so we can fix it.
